Installing WebDoubler And Basic Configuration Previous | Next

The WebDoubler Package

Before you install WebDoubler, make sure that your computer is properly configured. For WebDoubler, this means that your both your LAN and Internet connections are working properly, and that you have enough RAM and hard drive space.

If you have downloaded WebDoubler from the Internet, use Stuffit Expander or similar tool to extract the WebDoubler folder from the download package. If you have received WebDoubler on diskette or CD-ROM, double-click on the WebDoubler Installer icon to have the WebDoubler folder installed on your hard drive. In either case, the WebDoubler folder created will include all of the components of WebDoubler. No system extensions or other files will be placed anywhere else on the computer.

The WebDoubler folder will contain:

If any of these items are missing, WebDoubler may not run properly. You must keep WebDoubler and its component parts together in the single WebDoubler folder that was installed. However, you may move this folder anywhere on your hard drive - everything that WebDoubler needs is in this single folder.

Starting WebDoubler

To run WebDoubler, double-click the WebDoubler application icon. If you would like to automatically run WebDoubler when your Macintosh starts up, place an alias of the WebDoubler application icon in the "Startup Items" folder of your System Folder.

The first time you run WebDoubler, the Statistics window will automatically open, displaying a variety of information about the activity on your server. If this window is not visible, you may at any time open it by choosing the "Statistics" item from the "Server" menu.

Basic Server Configuration

Basic server settings are accessed by choosing the "Configuration..." item from the Server menu. When the Configuration window opens, the "Server" tab will automatically be selected.

WebDoubler's default configuration settings are a good starting point for most WebDoubler installations. In fact, in most cases WebDoubler can be used without adjusting any of the initial configuration settings. One basic setting you should be sure to change, however, is the remote administration username and password.

Port Number

The port number setting specifies the port on which the proxy server listens for incoming requests. The default setting is 8000. Ports 8000 and 8080 are the most common proxy port settings. Port numbers 1024 and below are reserved for well-defined Internet services, but you can use any port number you wish from 1025 to 32767. The port number selected here will need to match the proxy port configured in all browsers that use WebDoubler (see "Setting Up Browsers" for details).

Max. Connections

The maximum number of inbound connections refers to the number of page or image requests from browsers on your LAN that WebDoubler can service simultaneously. This does not reflect the total number of browsers that are configured to use WebDoubler, since clients are only connected to WebDoubler when they are actively downloading Web content. In most cases, the number of browsers configured to use the WebDoubler proxy will be much larger than the maximum number of simultaneous connections configured in WebDoubler.

However, you should also note that most modern Web browsers will initiate multiple client connections while downloading a single Web page. Usually, a single Web page access from a single Web client may result in five or more simultaneous client connections. Therefore, we recommend configuring WebDoubler to permit no less than 16 simultaneous connections.

The best way to determine the proper setting for Max. Connections is to periodically check the "Simultaneous Connections" statistic in the Peak Usage section of the main Statistics window. If the number of peak simultaneous connections is substantially lower than the configured number of maximum connections, you can most likely save RAM and CPU horsepower by reducing the number of maximum connections to a number slightly higher than the peak. If, on the other hand, the Simultaneous Connections statistic is always equal to the maximum number of connections you have configured in WebDoubler, you may need to increase the Max. Connections setting.

If you increase the Max Connections setting, you may also need to increase the amount of RAM allocated to WebDoubler. See details later in this section for how to change WebDoubler's RAM partition. For more information on optimizing the number of maximum connections for your network, see the WebDoubler page on the Maxum Web site.

Browser Administration Username and Password

WebDoubler settings can be modified both from the local machine and remotely from anywhere on the Internet using a Web browser. To ensure that unauthorized users do not change settings, a username and password is required to access the remote administration pages. Change these values to set the administrator name and password.

Important Security Note: When you first install WebDoubler, the Browser Administration username and password will be set to their default values of "auric" and "goldfinger". We strongly recommend that you change these from the default settings. If you do not, anyone on the Internet or on your LAN will be able to use the default username and password to change the configuration settings in WebDoubler running on your server.

Error Logging

WebDoubler can maintain a log file that can be used to help determine the cause of problems, should any arise. Click the "Error File:" button to choose the name and location of the error log file using a Standard File dialog. You also have the option of selecting the priority level of messages saved to the log. The available error levels are:

DebugExtremely detailed messages describing most low-level functions
VerboseDetailed messages describing most high-level functions
BasicSimple messages that note processed requests
WarningsMessages are sent only when unexpected processing is required
ErrorsMessages are sent only when errors occur
SuspendNo messages are sent to the error log at all

For normal operation, we recommend that the error level be set to either "Warnings", "Errors", or "Suspend". Additional detail will be saved to the error log by selecting one of the other priorities, but will cause unnecessary disk access which may decrease server performance. If you are having a specific problem and would like to log very detailed information, setting the error level to "Verbose" or "Debug" can be extremely helpful but should not be used under normal conditions.

The messages saved in the error log file can also be displayed in real time using the Activity Monitor window. See the section "Using WebDoubler" for more information on using the Activity Monitor.

Restart Server When Network Service Is Interrupted

In many, if not most, WebDoubler installations where the WebDoubler Macintosh has an Ethernet connection to a dedicated router that provides Internet access, this option is unneeded. However, less reliable modem and other Internet connections will sometimes fail. In these cases, network service is interrupted, leaving your network without Web access. When a low-level network interruption occurs, WebDoubler will always automatically quit. By checking the "Restart Server When Network Service Is Interrupted" option, WebDoubler will also issue a "graceful restart" of the Macintosh. If you choose to enable this option, be sure to put an alias to the WebDoubler application in your "Startup Items" folder, so that WebDoubler will be automatically launched after the Mac has restarted.

Plug-Ins Tab

The Plug-Ins tab of the Configuration window displays the loaded and active plug-ins, along with their version and status. This is a handy way to verify that the plug-ins are being loaded by WebDoubler correctly, and to check to make sure you are running the latest versions of each plug-in.

Setting WebDoubler's Application RAM

While the minimum amount of RAM that WebDoubler needs to run properly is 16 MB (16,384 K), WebDoubler performance can be significantly improved by giving it additional RAM to use for file caching and supporting more simultaneous users.

To allocate additional RAM to WebDoubler, follow these steps:

  1. Quit WebDoubler.
  2. Find the WebDoubler application icon in the WebDoubler folder on your hard drive.
  3. Highlight the WebDoubler application icon by clicking on it once.
  4. Choose "Get Info..." from the File menu.
  5. In the field labeled "Preferred Size", type in the amount of memory you wish WebDoubler to use.
  6. Close the window.

For up to date information on recommended RAM allocation based on a variety of variables (number of users, Internet connection speed, etc.) visit the WebDoubler page on Maxum's Web site.
